About

Located in Paris, France, the Institut de Recherche et Coordination Acoustique/Musique (IRCAM) is a world-renowned center for contemporary music, sound art, and scientific research in acoustics and computer music. Academically, the institute is best known for pioneering computer music software, spatialization techniques, and advanced audio signal processing through its rigorous postgraduate and doctoral programs. While degree courses are typically conducted in a bilingual or French-dominated research environment, the institute routinely welcomes international composers, researchers, and students via specialized master's tracks, residencies, and collaborative workshops. A distinctive characteristic that sets IRCAM apart is its physical location beneath the Place Stravinsky, housing cutting-edge acoustic spaces—including variable-acoustics halls and immersive 3D sound laboratories—that place students directly inside one of the planet's most elite sonic laboratories. International students benefit from a dedicated academic affairs office that coordinates global research exchanges, artistic residencies, and close mentorship by leading figures in modern electronic composition.

Background

IRCAM (French: Institut de recherche et coordination acoustique/musique; English: "Institute for Research and Coordination in Acoustics/Music") is a French institute dedicated to the research of music and sound, especially in the fields of avant garde and electro-acoustical art music. It is situated next to, and is organisationally linked with, the Centre Pompidou in Paris. The original building, designed by Renzo Piano and Richard Rogers, lay almost entirely underground beneath the square and fountain of Place Igor-Stravinsky. The above-ground "Piano tower" was added in 1990 by Renzo Piano alone, and two adjacent buildings, the former Jules Ferry school and the Bains-Douches baths, were converted in 1996.
