It was established in April 1963 and was the first National university of a Caribbean nation. The University of Guyana offers more than 180 undergraduate and graduate programmes in over 80 disciplines. The university focuses on Natural Sciences, Engineering, Environmental Studies, Forestry, Urban Planning and Management, Tourism Studies, Education, Creative Arts, Economics, Law, Medicine, Optometry and Nursing among other areas of study.
