About

Located in Tórshavn, Faroe Islands, the University of the Faroe Islands is the only higher education institution in the archipelago and is best known for its vital contributions to Arctic studies, marine science, and Nordic culture. Its strongest academic offerings are housed within the Faculty of Humanities, Social Sciences and Education, and the Faculty of Natural and Health Sciences, where research heavily emphasizes local ecosystems and island communities. For international students, the experience is uniquely intimate due to small class sizes and close collaboration with local researchers, though prospective students should note that many undergraduate courses require proficiency in Faroese or Danish, while select master's and research programs offer English-language options. The International Office provides guidance on student housing, visas, and academic integration, helping newcomers navigate the distinct island lifestyle. A truly distinctive characteristic of the university is its profound integration with Faroese society, allowing students to conduct fieldwork directly in one of the world's most unique isolated environments.
