About

The University of the South, commonly known as Sewanee, is a prestigious liberal arts institution set atop a sprawling 13,000-acre mountaintop campus on Tennessee’s Cumberland Plateau known as "The Domain." Renowned for its rich literary legacy as the home of *The Sewanee Review*, the university features standout academic programs in English, creative writing, environmental studies, and forestry that actively utilize the surrounding wilderness for immersive research. Student life balances a passionate outdoor culture of hiking, caving, and climbing with cherished academic traditions, most visibly the Order of the Gown, where students who achieve academic excellence wear black academic robes to class. Anchored by a student-run Honor Code and an Episcopal heritage, Sewanee fosters an exceptionally close-knit residential community shaped by deep faculty mentorship and a profound sense of place.
